This entertaining and educational DVD, starring Gossamer Gear founder Glen Van Peski, and experienced traditional backpacker and professional mountain guide Jackie Paulson, vividly demonstrates the differences between traditional and ultralight backpacking equipment and techniques, and shows the advantages of the ultralight philosophy for those interested in going further, faster, and with a lot less weight on their backs. On Day one of this three day adventure, Glen teaches Jackie some of the basic concepts of ultralight backpacking while she hikes with her traditional gear. Day two finds Glen sorting through Jackie's pack, tossing most of it out as she negotiates in vain to keep her cherished gear. He replaces it with a pack filled with lightweight gear (without telling her what's in the pack). As the remainder of the trip unfolds, Jackie discovers what a cutting-edge ultralight kit looks like, how to use her newfound gear and techniques, and realizes she can lighten her load without sacrificing comfort. Great footage, incredible dialog, exciting teaching. Watching Jackie's base pack weight drop from 29 lbs. to less than 8 lbs is impressive by itself, but also watching the effect that the reduced pack weight has on her hiking speed and endurance is truly amazing! This professional quality DVD, produced by ultralight photographer/producer Justin "Jolly Green" Gunn, includes discussion on the origins of ultralight backpacking, interviews with some leaders in the industry, and presents important concepts in a fresh, easy-to-understand, and entertaining format.
